Building an Upwards Happiness Spiral

Richard Bandler has a technique for intensifying any emotional state by locating where it arises in the body (I use the term body loosely as sometimes the sensations are interpreted as not being confined within the visible physical body) and following its path through the body. To intensify the sensations one spins the sensation repeatedly and rapidly through its path. The way our minds work, if we spin it in one direction It intensifies, in the other the intensity diminishes. Yes it’s made up, but it works, the mind likes metaphor.

In yesterday’s blog I repeatedly used the Access Consciousness question, “How can it get better than this?” Repeating this question again and again is a very powerful technique which, as far as I can see, works in a similar way to Richard Bandler’s spinning technique.

In the first place the repeated asking of the question,  “How can it get better than this?” conditions you to look out for good things, positive events, to find things for which to feel grateful. The repeated asking of the question,  “How can it get better than this?” intensifies the feeling of well being because you develop the expectation of good things and the ability to appreciate the positives in everything, it cultivates your “optimism gene”. Every time you practice the repeated asking of the question,  “How can it get better than this?” and find a positive answer it reinforces the health of your “happiness gene”. Yes I know that the “optimism gene” and the “happiness gene” are made up…or are they? Cultivate their development and they will become as real to your body/mind as the passage of time and the daily sunrise.

What I love about this is that the repeated asking of the question,  “How can it get better than this?” Is so simple. You just have to ask the question,  “How can it get better than this?” and let the mind get on with it, it requires no effort on your part whatsoever. The repeated asking of the question,  “How can it get better than this?” builds an upwards happiness spiral and the more you ask the more it builds.

You don’t have to be happy when you ask  the question,  “How can it get better than this?”, indeed you can ask it during the sad times to start the process of rebuilding happiness, ask the question, but don’t answer it, just let the mind look for the answer in the unfolding events of the day.
Every day  build an upwards happiness spiral simply by the repeated asking of the question,  “How can it get better than this?” Try it, what have you got to lose? How can it get better than this?
