The Madness of Miley Cyrus

Like so many actresses whose careers began with Disney,  Miley Cyrus is a favourite target of the critics. Until a few days ago I had never heard of twerking, I had to look it up. It seems that Miley is running a little bit wild and incurring the disapprobation of commentators. Were they never young? Did they never make mistakes?   When I was freed from the restrictions of school and home at the age of twenty,  I sometimes behaved badly,  it is fairly normal to overreact to unaccustomed freedom.  In the case of Miley Cyrus,  like Brittany Spears and Lindsay Lohan, she has had a fairly unusual childhood.  The number of Disney child stars who go wild as young adults suggests, to me, that something is lacking in the guidance they have been given as children. However a little craziness in one’s early twenties is rarely the end of the world.

I watched the video of “Wrecking Ball” as well as clips from some of Miley Cyrus’s recent performances. I hope she will not look back on them with too much embarrassment.  Her voice is good enough in itself not to need the support of soft porn to sell it. However Cyrus has a good body so if she must perform naked now is probably the best time,  in years to come she will be able to show the film to her grandchildren and say, “I looked good”. If she won’t feel able to show the film to her kids in the future, she may want to reconsider her performance.

My granddaughter was a Hannah Montana fan and I took her to the film. It was a good film with solid family values. I believe that those values are the ones underlying her upbringing, and they will be,  hopefully,  the ones to which she will return when she gets the craziness out of her system. At the moment there is no way I could let my grandchildren watch her as I would prefer not to have to try and explain her act to them. I won’t condemn her, I have been young too. She will grow up and she must be allowed to make her own decisions,  and her own mistakes; I hope she will have no cause for regret. My only real regret about Miley Cyrus is her choice of song, I am sorry,  but I do not like modern pop music, with that voice she could sing country. I would love to hear her cover some Patsy Cline or Dolly Parton, I think she could.  I believe that Miley Cyrus is potentially a great star, I believe she is a good person and I hope someday she will be as good a role model to young girls as she used to be. In the mean time give her some space to find herself. I still believe in Miley Cyrus.
