Past Pale (NaPoWriMo Day 19)

It is a challenge to produce a poem each day for a month. I am surprised with how many I have been happy, but some days tiredness and lack of inspiration make even poetry a chore, today was one of those days. I am not going to record this one, I am too tired. I am committed to a poem a day and so I include it, but I’m not sure more working could improve it.

Past Pale
Pale sky, pale pink, pale blue, pale wisps of white;
So sunset heralds the oncoming night,
Gathering from a glorious day
The pastel pigments of the eventide.
Away the sleepy sun goes now, away
And playing children, mothers call, inside
Now the Easter holiday is ended
And to school they must return tomorrow.
Still these last sunny days have been splendid
Opportunities to play, so sorrow
For tomorrow is really out of place.
In the promise of summer, their return
Should give each child reason to turn their face
Forward, rather than look back and yearn
For days past. Before them dawns a new light
The past shall pale before that future bright.
