On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me…
A pyramid. Four is the number of solidity symbolised as a square. A pyramid is four triangles standing upon a square; in energy work one can find an energetic focus in a space or structure by drawing a line from each corner, their intersection is the energy focus. A pyramid has five lines from the corners that intersect in the centre of the structure, a good place to bury a king. Four is also the number of the people, the group, it is the next step outward from the family, symbolised by three. Four is also the number of the earth, the four directions.
Four suggests solidity and reliability in both a physical and moral sense, “on the square”, “squared up” “all square”. The sense of solidity suggested by the square gives rise to the derogatory term “square” for someone who appears old fashioned or conventional. Many young people think of classical music as “square”, but for anyone with imagination all music contains magic. Walt Disney understood the magic of music and its power to stimulate the imagination which is why it plays such a large part in any of his films. Back in the Nineteen-thirties Disney wanted to make classical music accessible to everyone, not just those educated to appreciate it. He used the power of music to stimulate the imagination to have his artists create an animated film, almost without dialogue except for the narrative introductions, coupling animation with whole pieces of classical music played by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski. My mother saw Disney’s Fantasia in nineteen-fortyone and told me about it throughout my childhood. I had heard so much about the film I was prepared to be disappointed, however I bought it in the early nineteen-nineties and was totally enraptured, I still am. Last night Neelam and I went to the Hydro in Glasgow to see Disney’s Fantasia Live, where episodes from Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 were accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Fantasia remains as magical as ever, and judging by the number of children in the audience will remain so.
